I missed Saturday’s Fair, and from the reports I’ve heard this was a wise decision. The reports have been fairly consistent from those observers I have come across. It began as normal – businesses and vendors setting up on the beach near the Reef, people preparing for trade and looking to the future. Even those that suspected that a Shalan’ti ship cloaked with invisibility spells was in the area did not forego their plans. But none were expecting an open attack. The ship – believed to be a mercenary ship – has been in the area since at least last Thursday, though possibly longer as we feel they have been watching us for longer. But last Thursday was the date the Deeper jousting tournament was disrupted and their Talisae, Xae’raan Thiaroe, disappeared.
Firebolts rent the air aimed for the beach just as the Shalan’ti ship shimmered into view, showing armed warriors headed for the beach. Chaos followed as Eyr residents fled, and the Deepers, with the help of a few brave others, formed an attack. It appears our efforts to keep Stormstead seemingly neutral have failed. I see this open attack a direct retaliation for our interference the night the Wyvern attacked those gathered and was killed because of it.
I heard the sound of explosions and flashes of light as far away as my den. By the time I reached the cliffs of Ohm, the battle was nearly over. The firebolts having died down to glowing pits in the sand, the Shalan’ti making a retreat back to their ship with more hostages taken. Reports say that Juni of the Moei Asing was taken along with another siren – Neris. The Talisae is believed to be a hostage on the boat. If they have her, is only a matter of time before she ends up in one of those shrouds and tossed out onto the waves. How long before these hostages meet the same fate as the bodies shrouded in sailcloth that now pile the banks? “An eye for an eye.” I’ve heard that adage before and I think that the Vega family of Shalan’ti lives by this code. Unless thwarted in some way, I do not see them leaving Eyr’s waters until a matching body is delivered – one for each of the sailors. There is no telling how many hostages are on the boat. Perhaps they are reaching their count?
Stormstead should exercise caution. Our relationship with the members of Kuvari’s Deep is tenuous but beneficial. Relations steering toward positive which is encouraging. It is doubtful that the Salty Swallow could remain in the waters without the protection they can offer. But this battle with the Shalan’ti poses a real dilemma. We need to push for peaceful resolution unless we wish to live under fear of attack for the rest of our time here. The Vega family is known for their vengeance – they would not have risen to power in Shalan’ti without it. I would like to see the Deepers negotiate. This is the only way I feel they will see any come out of that ship alive and also end the vengeance battle. In the meantime, I will avoid Eyr’s waterways and passages. With their cloaking ability, there is no telling where they may strike next.
