The Athenaeum is activated.

After the crystals were destroyed by the machinations of the evil lich, Ganis, the door to the Temple of the Ebon Reach was locked. Several of the Reach had been trying to find a way to open the great stone door.  A rather infamous lot, no doubt. Struggled against the door with magic and physical force for some time that night until finally… the door rolled open. But not perhaps by their efforts alone… Entering the strange temple arrangement, they found nothing.  Except silence and … the feeling of something ancient and ageless. When the stone giant revealed itself to them, they tried with some good effort to speak to and question the ancient and cursed creature. It refused to reveal its secrets to them. In fact, it did little else than wave its arms of stone about. Certainly the Reachers considered themselves out of luck… until the stone giant activated the Athenaeum.

What is the Athenaeum? I have no clue. Perhaps an ancient library of some sort? All I can tell you is what I saw that night.  Perhaps these clues will aid you, the intrepid reader, to figure out the mystery.

The stone giant issued a low growling groan. It didn’t sound angry, just, awakening. Its sight did not appear to focus on anyone in the room, even though there was plenty of conversation going on as to what the stone giant must be doing and why. In fact, no regard was given at all to those who apparently were invading its space, as clearly, the giant of stone was familiar with its surroundings. Its movement, creaking and rasping in sound, sent impact tremors felt by all in the temple and beyond into the wider Ebon Reach.   The lighted motes in the room coalesced around his hulk and spun as if in response to his presence.  He turned in a slow circle, thick stone fingers began to make delicate traceries in the air.

The Reachers seemed to confirm… that this giant of stone acted in such a manner that knowledge would be revealed to them.

The stone giant continued the traceries. Large arms waving as the air in the room began to thicken.  A rising sense of power strong enough to make skin prickle bounced about the room.  The stone giant groaned again, louder this time and with purpose.  The sound much like the rumbling sound of a distant rock slide rising in volume.  The walls and ground now visibly vibrated with the sound.  Light motes and dust begin to swirl down from the heights and through the air to settle on those gathered.  The feeling of power in the room was also rising.  Those sensitive to magic felt it in their gut and a tingling along their extremities.  Even those not magical based could feel goosebumps of awareness.  Static electricity clung to the air.  With a loud “ROAAAARRRRR” the creature spread its arms as light traceries begin to blink and glow along the walls and in the air.

And with these maneuvers, the stone giant activated the Athenaeum and it flickered to life.

The stone giant appeared to react to words spoken of sin and redemption. Those present could feel the emotions swirling in the very air. The stone giant revealed himself as ‘Kohl’ and quite loudly at that. The lights brightened in the place, perhaps to full strength and the stone giant revealed that indeed the Athenaeum was engaged and that it’s task was done and its service complete. And then the stone giant would simply disappear back into the rock of the temple. Seemingly gone. Leaving behind a mystery that might never be solved. And yet, the Reachers would try to decipher the symbols floating horizontally and vertically in a swirling blue miasma within the temple proper. They’d work far into the night, but be no closer to true understanding in the morning then when they began.

– anonymous, because who wouldn’t fear reprisal from the Reach?
