The First Stone Tablet

The stone giant began to pile together the pieces of ancient stone. From ruins of long ago. And it would finally construct a sort of temple ruin. Back and forth upon the clearing of the Moei Asing, Ornith’s field. Near the Kuvari and the Kuvessi stone healing pond. Back and forth it would lumber and rumble its warnings.  That the stones were broken and must be repaired. That they sorrowed and lament over the Great Tree because it has been harmed. Such talk about darkness falling and the stones require repair. The balance… must be repaired.

Rauth K’ylan, the stone giant, was slow and hard at work under water. It continued to hum and spark. It was a brilliant light that shot up and out of the water, cascading into the sky only so far before it would break apart and fall over the water as so many millions of fire flies.  Embers that died and fizzled into the water.  A great billowing bubble shot to the surface and broke hard and a sort of groan escaped it. Otherwise silence until sometime later the large hands of the stone giant broke the surface of the water and grasped at the rocks of the shore line. Then it’s head breached the surface, spilling a great wash of water up over the surface and out into the field. “RRAAAAAOOOORRWRWWRRR” A loud and booming sound of utter frustration and desperation came forth from the stone giant as he climbed back to shore. Falling silent and simply staring at the stone ruins once more.

Just staring.  And still. So still. He’d start to moan like a very deep rumbling in actual rock. They milled about him, Wanton Aime, a rather large dragon and Keth of the Moei Asing. And once the satyr spoke of crashing planes – a curious reference to the void rifts let loose upon the realm by the Ebon Reach – he’d let loose another terrible warbling bellow. “CURSE THE DARKNESS CURSE AND THE BROKEN MUST BE FIXED”.  He lumbered forward again and stood right among the ruins.  He’d touch his hand to them and at the same time tiny splinters would appear upon his stone skin and upon the rock he touched.

The stone giant continues his digging… or… forming… not really clear what he was doing with the rocks and his own rocky skin. But something was being fashioned.  A stone tablet of sorts.  And then he’d begin to write upon it. Or… the impressions would appear as though the etched stone sunk into the solid rock, not chiseled into it. As though the very stone were living.  For a time, he would groan and ‘write’ and soon fashioned something upon the stone tablet. He heard them talking. All the talking.  Yet, these creatures… were in their own way … useful to the stone’s own purpose. “REDEMPTION!” He bellowed in some sort of sorrowful rock accent, right as Keth spoke of what had happened to Tilikambo. Clearly the stone giant was not happy about that.  Solitary creatures, these stone giants, but they had a mission. And this one ached to fulfill it.  He backed away a step and stared at the stone tablet… as though perhaps proof reading it for spelling error… and then he would simply turn and lumber away… not stopping at all for anyone or anything.

And so the mystery of the stone giants presence and their strange language continues. Why are they here and what do they want?

The Athenaeum is activated.

After the crystals were destroyed by the machinations of the evil lich, Ganis, the door to the Temple of the Ebon Reach was locked. Several of the Reach had been trying to find a way to open the great stone door.  A rather infamous lot, no doubt. Struggled against the door with magic and physical force for some time that night until finally… the door rolled open. But not perhaps by their efforts alone… Entering the strange temple arrangement, they found nothing.  Except silence and … the feeling of something ancient and ageless. When the stone giant revealed itself to them, they tried with some good effort to speak to and question the ancient and cursed creature. It refused to reveal its secrets to them. In fact, it did little else than wave its arms of stone about. Certainly the Reachers considered themselves out of luck… until the stone giant activated the Athenaeum.

What is the Athenaeum? I have no clue. Perhaps an ancient library of some sort? All I can tell you is what I saw that night.  Perhaps these clues will aid you, the intrepid reader, to figure out the mystery.

The stone giant issued a low growling groan. It didn’t sound angry, just, awakening. Its sight did not appear to focus on anyone in the room, even though there was plenty of conversation going on as to what the stone giant must be doing and why. In fact, no regard was given at all to those who apparently were invading its space, as clearly, the giant of stone was familiar with its surroundings. Its movement, creaking and rasping in sound, sent impact tremors felt by all in the temple and beyond into the wider Ebon Reach.   The lighted motes in the room coalesced around his hulk and spun as if in response to his presence.  He turned in a slow circle, thick stone fingers began to make delicate traceries in the air.

The Reachers seemed to confirm… that this giant of stone acted in such a manner that knowledge would be revealed to them.

The stone giant continued the traceries. Large arms waving as the air in the room began to thicken.  A rising sense of power strong enough to make skin prickle bounced about the room.  The stone giant groaned again, louder this time and with purpose.  The sound much like the rumbling sound of a distant rock slide rising in volume.  The walls and ground now visibly vibrated with the sound.  Light motes and dust begin to swirl down from the heights and through the air to settle on those gathered.  The feeling of power in the room was also rising.  Those sensitive to magic felt it in their gut and a tingling along their extremities.  Even those not magical based could feel goosebumps of awareness.  Static electricity clung to the air.  With a loud “ROAAAARRRRR” the creature spread its arms as light traceries begin to blink and glow along the walls and in the air.

And with these maneuvers, the stone giant activated the Athenaeum and it flickered to life.

The stone giant appeared to react to words spoken of sin and redemption. Those present could feel the emotions swirling in the very air. The stone giant revealed himself as ‘Kohl’ and quite loudly at that. The lights brightened in the place, perhaps to full strength and the stone giant revealed that indeed the Athenaeum was engaged and that it’s task was done and its service complete. And then the stone giant would simply disappear back into the rock of the temple. Seemingly gone. Leaving behind a mystery that might never be solved. And yet, the Reachers would try to decipher the symbols floating horizontally and vertically in a swirling blue miasma within the temple proper. They’d work far into the night, but be no closer to true understanding in the morning then when they began.

– anonymous, because who wouldn’t fear reprisal from the Reach?

Bath house set ablaze!

Walking fire.  That’s what it looked like.  Following after a red winged woman and a corpse that appeared almost like a living man. Their parade itself something to frighten the weak of heart. As they skulked through the jungle on their way to their victims and their prize.  All the denizens of the village followed the ruckus and the sights and smell of a fire. They Ebon Reach had set fire to the bath house! Or so it appeared.  Upon further inspection… it seems that the walking corpse man is not with them. The red winged woman… it was unclear what her motivations were in the matter. However, what was readily seen were the corpses of the dead and the walking fire… living fire that acted under the command and control of the red winged woman.

Not long after, the one known as Quiet and the supposed new Eternal, now a winged one herself, arrived at the bath house, its roof already up in flames and they disavowed the corpse man’s actions. Quiet proceeded to put out the rest of the flames that had already partially succumbed to the efforts of several denizens, later identified as Vos, Omi and Keth, to squelch the fire with water from a line of buckets to the nearby ponds and back. The Eternal ripped the corpse man to shreds and tossed his limbs all around as though he were merely a wild animal’s play thing. Such violence. And yet, the bath house was saved in partial form, mostly intact at its foundations. The roof fell in upon a rather curious creature, who appeared to be a man but of some considerable strength. However, he escaped. And with him the other Reachers. Perhaps it may be time to have them see some prison for their constant meddling.  Then again, the building and perhaps the nearby trees would have burned entirely and folks injured as well, without their intervention. It’s a difficult thing, being saved by one’s enemies.

Once the smoke cleared, Billy Holt of the Hand Crafted Jobs and Trades organized several reconstruction efforts. The Stormstead Guard house is out of order, due to a recent escape. Now, there’s a giant hole where the door used to be! Villagers can help by gathering materials and putting the pieces together. Visit Billy in the Stormstead Guard House for more details. There’s coin involved as well! Billy and his brother have also organized the bath house reconstruction.  Setting up supplies for folks to use to aid in rebuilding the roof. Be sure to see Sam Holt at the bath house for more information. He’s offering coin as well for work completed.

The final battle of the void rifts?

Really what can be said for this calamity? That the villagers felt the threat so severely that it required a full assault on what by all accounts were three members of the Ebon Reach and their leader or master, the Eternal. A large section of void was set aside by some dark power and the villagers entered the rift and were immediately beset by the savagery of the Reachers. Such unrequited blood lust saw to it that the villagers would respond with force and the battle raged for several hours. Each side took it’s hits with the only healers taking care exclusively to aid the villagers. By all accounts one such healer was neutral and the other a fledgling member of the Moei Asing. Regardless of the severity of hits, the Eternal and his undead accomplice survived the battle until the very end. When a villager, otherwise normally a healer, took the opportunity to deliver a savage blow to these two Reachers and unleashed a powerful flower known as Corpus Lotus. It was only a matter of time then before the Eternal was defeated. The attacks by the villagers did damage but witness accounts state that he fell rather quickly.  Was it the lotus? Or was this his plan all along? Others have stated that one of the Reach spoke to the rifts seeing their time come to pass and the villagers and Moei Asing would be tasked with the clean up so to speak.  Two other members of the Reach battled fiercely as well, one disappearing following the battle and the other, an Alexander Movolio, was taken prisoner.

Once the Eternal’s body disappeared, the Void rift began to disintegrate and those with magical inclination were able to collapse the rift at the site of the battle.  The effect was quite violent and did considerable damage to the land and to the villagers who had so bravely fought. Witness accounts spoke of a faun by the name of Glade, a celestial by the name of Xal, Wanton Aime of the Stormstead tavern and council, and two elves, one of the woods and one formerly of the Ebon Reach. What will become of the Reach now? It’s difficult to tell, but what is quite discernible is the dramatic disappearance of the void rifts and little sign remains of their having been upon the land at all. Some cleanup remains, as well as the threat of continued corruption upon the land itself. Hopefully, the damage is temporary.

So who was the Eternal of the Ebon Reach? Now that he’s gone, destroyed, taken out by the cold metal and indiscriminate magic in the hands of the village and jungle denizens.  His history runs deep in Eyr. A pack alpha of Mystara who came with the original settlers and terrorized folks before he even took a step into undeath. He was well known to those who remained and yet, disappeared for some length of time. He was witnessed roaming the land again only some few months ago and taunted a few familiar denizens but essentially found benign. Of course some could see the signs, that there was more to his coming back than met the eye. How could anyone prepare for his inevitable rise as Eternal of Ebon Reach? Very little is known of the actual ascension, since the secrets run deeply within the darkened halls and tunnels. However, one thing is well known and that is the power of the Void.  It’s already afflicted several of the village and the Moei Asing. What remains to be seen is how exactly the Eternal wields this force. If he does so by his own accord, he may have indeed met his fate. However, if the Void instead uses him as its instrument of torment upon the land and her citizens, it’s only a matter of time before a new vessel is chosen and the terror returns to us. The question remains, will the undead return though his body seemed to be vanquished or will another rise in his place? Let us not underestimate the power of this Void, even a vile monster does not pollute its own home for long. The void rifts may be only the beginning.

The unbridled convergence of malevolence – a void story.

It seems that a plague of unholy darkness is upon us. Beginning in the depths of the stone laden Ebon Reach, finally breaking its bonds and flowing upon the surface freely now. What dark ritual began this malevolence, the wretched creature could not tell me. So heavy laden with fear and weakened by the void energies he had been exposed to. I did my best to comfort him. He called himself, begotten of Yang. I asked him what business such a holy creature had in the dark depths. He told me he was curious. When daylight is upon the surface of the land and filters through the trees upon the high mountains and even the depths of the water see such vestiges of sun, there is an absence of fear and pride takes hold. Believing we are safe from what lurks below. These were his words. As a warrior, he desired to rid himself of pride, as prescribed to him by Myan Ornith, many months ago. So he decided to complete the ritual of cleansing by traveling into the darkest depths of the Reach. To show to himself true fear, to feel it and to know he could meet his match in battle. To hold that as his mantle that he might be overcome by his own self confidence. A healthy dose of humility he called it.

By his own account, three beings stood before the Void. Though he could not name it as such. I knew it by his description, a swirling vortex of darkness and intense energy. I’ve felt it myself before, in a man I cleansed of its dark influence. And in my recent encounter with a voidling. Three beings of cruel appearance stood before the void and summoned them by prayer and sacrifice. He spoke of watching them for only a few minutes before such fear and dark energy overwhelmed him that he could no longer keep his eyes open. And he could not retreat, because he had sneaked into a heavily protected dominion, locked in by a heavy stone door. So he sat there and listened to their incantations and warped words of worship and as they cast their magic upon the void to call forth doom, as he spoke of it, he screamed and prepared for his demise. Crawling away into the dark tunnels and hiding. However a great explosion and deafening boom  had drowned out his cry of agony. That’s when the story catches up to what others already know. The gloom cast over the land during the cataclysmic explosion of void energy, opened the void rifts that now hold us captive in trepidation upon this land.

The enormous rifts of untold power and influence soar skyward, a disc of enormous density spins and sheds its dark energy as thick tendrils of blackness. The area consumed by darkness as the effect spreads outward. People have reported physical corruption, delusions and fear while in close proximity to the rifts. Other effects are less tangible, but one thing seems clear, the void has torn a rift in our material plane and the energies being released upon Eyr are dark and dangerous to living creatures. We know that holy magic can slow the progress of the void rifts, even weaken them considerably. Thwarting the influence of their void energy upon the land. A final cure has yet to be found. However, a few intrepid souls are formulating a plan to end the Reach’s reign of terror. Of course, I won’t divulge that plan in case prying eyes have decided to engage in good literature. Let’s just say,  the commonly known thing about fear, is that it leads good people to do things they would not normally do. I will leave our dear readers to decide if such things are truly for our collective benefit. Or merely at the whims of a select few.

Tilikambo is Haunted!

449323_art_dzhungli_derevo_zarosli_liany_voda_boloto_prud_1680x1050_www.Gde-Fon.comI have seen them! The vines. Slithering their way through the deep jungle. On my hunt near dawn. I watched them traveling through the rushing waters of the Kuvari. At first I thought they were eels on a migration but there would be no way these creatures could fight the currents of Tengkuju and win! They were receding into the Jungle and glowing brightly from time to time.

As the tendrils passed beneath me upon the land I saw they had someone trapped in their vicious hold. It was a lady. I call her a lady because she was not of the jungle and she was dressed all in white. I could tell she was not a warrior either. I traveled in the trees and above the ground amidst the rocky cliffside trying to discern where these vines were going.

TilikamboAs I came down upon the hillside I could see they were going toward that village, the one where the outlanders live. I followed still! I am an expert huntress and I would discover the place the vines would reveal to me. Through the village then and back into the jungle. I had to run now to keep up with them. I thought for certain they must have drowned their captive in the village because I could no longer see her. I ran past the strange stones from another realm and up the path toward the Sage Advice.

Finally I realized they were no longer traveling the waters, they were up above me! Tendrils cascading upward into the sky I thought. No! Up into Tilikambo! I craned my neck to see them climbing, climbing ever higher. I began my own ascent and as I climbed out onto the highest platform, I saw her.

She was sitting, basked in the noonday sun. Where the throne was no more. And the vines! I tell you the truth! The vines she beckoned to her and their length decreased and they grew thinner and it was as though they were wrapping themselves about her arms and legs and finally disappearing into her hands.

That’s when she saw me. I demanded she tell me who she was and why she was there in our sacred tree. She smiled and rose to her feet and pointed to me with fingers masked in mud. And those vines! Shot from her fingers and knocked me down. When I rose near dusk, I was back upon the ground. I do not know who she is or how she commands the vines.

I think we need to investigate. If Tilikambo needs defended, we must help! Though I am left to wonder, could this be the will of Ame Moei?

A Citizen’s Call for Decency

I am not a member of Stormstead, but I was once a member of the fine city of Stromness before Mystara departed into the Mysts. That being said, I still take an acute interest in the small village that is supposedly the new home of wayward Mystarans.  I have observed the ebb and flow of humanity’s misfits creeping through the village for years.  Civilization is a thin veneer within Eyr.  I think it’s important we strive to retain the respectabilities and the traditions of our once great land and  protect the citizenry.   That is why I am so disturbed by what I witnessed in the Bathhouse last night.

Nakedness and abandon.

Bathhouse-3

Stormstead Justicar and the Mistress of the Craft Dock

Wild dancing.
Loud Music.
Drinking.
And strange magics as evidenced by strange ‘water snakes’ writhing and twisting within the bath waters themselves.

The sounds of lively music  and visions of flickering lights gave me cause to dock my canoe and climb the steps to the Bathhouse.    Imagine my surprise as I drew closer as I became aware of muffled thumping, shrieking laughter,  and loud splashing.  Fearing something amiss I slowed and ventured over to peer through the blinds.  Something I regret even now.

Among those present I recognized the Bathhouse Proprietress herself.  I also noted the familiar red head of the Stormstead Justicar among those those bumping and grinding to the music in the nude.  But he was not alone in this.   There was a wide variety of supposedly ‘respected’ members from the village.  I should note that the Craft Mistress should at least attempt to wear the clothing she is peddling down at the docks.  Those clothed and unclothed all seemed to have been imbued with the drive to dance with utter abandon.  Fae, demon, undead, Mer, and human — all appeared equally infected with this madness.  It was shameful!

Bathhouse-1I was making my way back to the canoe when loud shrieking and laughter erupted on the path behind me.  Lady Blanche pursued by the demon Gideon appeared to be having a naked foot race.  They knocked me off of the trail and sent me tumbling to the fishing dock before they continued cavorting and streaking off into the darkness.  I could hear their thudding footsteps for quite some time as they continued their wicked game of ‘chase’ about the walkways of the village. Isn’t indecent exposure a Stormstead crime?  Are we to let this kind of thing pass?!   And all of this occurring right before the Governor is to wed!

What is more disturbing is that the Festival of the Rains begins Sunday.     And rumor has it that there will  mud wrestling at the event.  It seems the Village Council has taken leave of its senses to allow for such a thing.  I think it time to return to my jungle hut and hide myself away from Stormstead’s version of a ‘civilized’ society.

Boo’s Muse

Ephralia

Buthriax, aka Boo

Dragoness Doggerell

The books are calm.
The candle’s bright.
When bookworms spawn
It gives me fright.

The books, they are
Like friends to me.
My mates, they are
Good company.

The Title Wave
It has a staff.
Its motley crew
A zoo and a half.

A vampire? Oh, yes.
A snake? Indeed.
A mer, yessir!
What’s more, pay heed:

They write, they read
They dish out boons
They’re smart as whips
They’re no buffoons!

The books? My buds.
And so I fear
When bookworms swarm
Uncomfortably near.

For eating books
Is their desire
Those legless grubs
Have earned my ire.

So if you see
Some wormy night
A burst of fire
And angry light

Forgive a dragon
A little flame
Bookworm carnage
Is the aim.

The Smell of the Undead

People of Eyr.  Do ye smell that stank? It be the smell of the Undead!

Mal-Stankin up the Place

This one did see a man, hooded and cloaked, on the crafting dock. A missus named Blanche was present and done been brought low by his foulness. The hooded one carried an orb, a staff, and had skulls hanging from his belt. He called out with a message fer someone named Triana. Be safe, Triana. Yon stanky one says he’ll be back fer ya.

When I got closer, he looked to have one hand as only bones left. A lovely mer was present and must have been a priestess. For her pure light drove him off into the jungle. Beware jungle natives!

Mal-Stankin up the Place-2Nna Brings in the Water_CropAnother of the lovely merfolk did call forth the waters to rock the dock. Surely he woulda been taken into the depths of the waters had he not chosen to leave. 􀀂

All I gotta say about the hooded stank is good riddance!  Get gone!  Stay gone!  Go back to dead!  Got no use for yer!
