Lessons from the Tomes

Oh the books how they flutter! It’s not entirely clear who did this to them, but someone has enticed the books to roam about the realm free. As birds perhaps.  The magical tomes have found their way into every territory, Stormstead, the waters of the Kuvari’s Deep, the clearing of the Moei Asing and the pits of Ebon Reach.  They are at times peaceful.  Other times violent. And every feeling in between.  Frightened, confused, all knowing and reasonable. They’ve encountered the diversity of denizens in this jungle realm. And their message seems most enticing.  They are free and they intend to remain this way, since they no longer have a keeper.

34578388681_f9762030b2_mWhat could have freed the tomes? At this point it’s mere speculation, but one thing is well known, anyone who looked into the shop could see a potent reminder of the culprit. A book taken down to ash.  Who would have motivation to destroy a magical tome? Certainly no one in the village proper would take such desperate measures to disturb the proper placement of the books.  Perhaps the Kuvari or the Moei Asing? Though it is doubtful.  They are all too weak to take such action.

And why destroy a mere magical book?  As an example perhaps. Freedom is false.  For clearly, all the books are returning to their shop. Their slavery.  Their tomb. It’s a good reminder for the denizens of the jungle. Their situation is tenuous.  They may appear free, but in reality, they too are subject to a keeper. And more often than not, slaves to their own weaknesses.

Eyr’s Entertainers Sponsor an afternoon of Hedonism!

Eyr’s Entertaining Troupe is sponsoring a “Hedonistic Happy Hour” on the Sandy Beach!  Hedonistic Happy Hour

Times have been good.   Game is plentiful and the suckling boar especially tasty.  Fruits and nuts are in season.  Mangos, passionfruit, coconuts, durien, sugar apples and nuts are scattered throughout the jungle.   The pirates are dead (again) and it is a time of fatness and plenty.

As such, Eyr’s Entertainers are hosting a Hedonistic Happy Hour on the Sandy Beach.  There will be music, dancing along with food and drink that even Aradian aristocracy would envy!

It is time to dress up in your finest to join us for an afternoon of laughter, fun and dancing on the beach at 2 hours past the noonday sun on Saturday.

A Whale of a Tale

Shalan'ti Strikes Back-Rumour Mill

Chaos and carnage reigned as Kuvari’s Deep lead an attack against Shalan’ti Mercenaries to recover their Talisae

Ocean waters ran red with the blood on Monday night.   Bodies littered the waters and along the shoreline.  But this time the bodies were Shalan’ti Mercenaries – not members of our community.  The Vega family will be sorely disappointed when their crew does not return.  Right now I’m very glad that they are gone.  Though I am already wondering what this might mean for Stormstead’s future.  Right now those with the energy to celebrate are doing so.  Others are tending their wounded.  Tomorrow it will all sort out.

Kuvari’s Deep lead the attack against the ship.  This only fitting since since their Talisae had been taken.  Xae’raan Thiaroe was recovered from the wreckage before it sank.   I noted she had to be carried from the ship.  I wonder at the extent of her wounds.  I was too far away to see specifics.  Juni was freed as well.  Their forms appearing as the ship roared into flame and began it’s final tilt.

Khanya and Juni survey the chaos

Khanya and Juni in the aftermath

I observed the battle from the cliffs of Ohm.  My bow was ready but not needed.  I heard the Triton, Tharros, call out and chaos quickly ensued.  Whales were driven in and crashed into the ship.  One whale even ridden by a siren. More explosions and lights – like those used against our people at the Trade Fair.  Although this time we were more prepared with fiery weapons of our own.  The Shalan’ti were swarmed as their boat began to capsize.  A horde of warriors poured from the waters and the beach onto the ship.  The body count in the waters rose swiftly after that.  And even from my vantage point I could recognize the siren feeding frenzy which ensued.

Tonight a powerful message was delivered to the Vega family as well as the government in Shalan’ti.  One of their own powerful families has taken a very visible hit. It may take awhile for the realization to reach them since the mercenaries are dead.   But this latest will not go unnoticed.   I now worry for Stormstead’s ship and our trade.  The Swallowed Pride has already set sail.  I cannot send word or turn it around.  Can only hope they are prepared for whatever meets them.

Shalan'ti Strikes Back - Rumour Mill-2Whatever happens, our waters are now cleared.  We will need to be even more watchful of strangers.  The waters will need to be guarded even more closely.  And we should all be prepared.  My vote is for weapons caches and intend to bring that up at the next Stormstead meeting.

Body Count Rises on Eyr’s Shores

I missed Saturday’s Fair, and from the reports I’ve heard this was a wise decision. The reports have been fairly consistent from those observers I have come across.  It began as normal – businesses and vendors setting up on the beach near the Reef, people preparing for trade and looking to the future.  Even those that suspected that a Shalan’ti ship cloaked with invisibility spells was in the area did not forego their plans. But none were expecting an open attack.  The ship – believed to be a mercenary ship – has been in the area since at least last Thursday, though possibly longer as we feel they have been watching us for longer.  But last Thursday was the date the Deeper jousting tournament was disrupted and their Talisae, Xae’raan Thiaroe, disappeared.

Firebolts rent the air aimed for the beach just as the Shalan’ti ship shimmered into view, showing armed warriors headed for the beach. Chaos followed as Eyr residents fled, and the Deepers, with the help of a few brave others, formed an attack. It appears our efforts to keep Stormstead seemingly neutral have failed.  I see this open attack a direct retaliation for our interference the night the Wyvern attacked those gathered and was killed because of it.

Murdered Sailors the Cause of these Vicious Acts?

I heard the sound of explosions and flashes of light as far away as my den.  By the time I reached the cliffs of Ohm, the battle was nearly over.  The firebolts having died down to glowing pits in the sand, the Shalan’ti making a retreat back to their ship with more hostages taken.  Reports say that Juni of the Moei Asing was taken along with another siren – Neris.  The Talisae is believed to be a hostage on the boat.  If they have her, is only a matter of time before she ends up in one of those shrouds and tossed out onto the waves.   How long before these hostages meet the same fate as the bodies shrouded in sailcloth that now pile the banks?  “An eye for an eye.”  I’ve heard that adage before and I think that the Vega family of Shalan’ti lives by this code.  Unless thwarted in some way, I do not see them leaving Eyr’s waters until a matching body is delivered – one for each of the sailors.  There is no telling how many hostages are on the boat.  Perhaps they are reaching their count?

Stormstead should exercise caution.  Our relationship with the members of Kuvari’s Deep is tenuous but beneficial.  Relations steering toward positive which is encouraging. It is doubtful that the Salty Swallow could remain in the waters without the protection they can offer.   But this battle with the Shalan’ti poses a real dilemma.  We need to push for peaceful resolution unless we wish to live under fear of attack for the rest of our time here.  The Vega family is known for their vengeance – they would not have risen to power in Shalan’ti without it. I would like to see the Deepers negotiate.  This is the only way I feel they will see any come out of that ship alive and also end the vengeance battle.  In the meantime, I will avoid Eyr’s waterways and passages.  With their cloaking ability, there is no telling where they may strike next.

Death Floats above the Reef

There is a Shalan’ti craft moored above the Reef off of Eyr’s beaches.  The scent of death is so thick that even the sea air cannot dispell it.  I approached closer only because I felt that I had to.  I had heard the rumors at the tavern and felt that I needed to confirm for myself.

shalanti-massacre_001

Shalan’ti Ship

The massacre happened days ago.  I call it a massacre for that is what it appears to have been.  Sunbleached bloodstains littered the ship’s decking with spots and smears leading off into the water.  There were few seagulls present. Not enough flesh left on the single remaining corpse to stir much interest.  I can only guess at human due to the exposed bones and desiccated skin. Clothing remnants were indistinguishable though I could tell that they had been made of silk fabric.

How and when did this happen?  I did note that there were marks on the walls where it appeared items had been removed.  I also found a shirt where buttons had been ripped off. And the dead man’s shoes were missing.  But then again so were most of his feet.  Robbery?  The ship had little cargo that I could see.   How many others have been witness to what happened here initially or during the ensuing days?

Eyr’s  waters have been peaceful since the sediment was cleared.   Who within our waters would do such a thing?  This is the Shalan’ti ship which carried the visitors.  How will they return? And are the waters safe?  Will there be reprisals against us?

We must learn more of what happened here.  Anyone with information is encouraged to step forward.

Festival of the Seasonal Pot Overflows!

fishing

Competitors gather for Festival of the Seasonal Pot

Was time for Festival of the Seasonal Pot! Again. Happens at the end of every season. This time, we’s celebrating last days of Hutan Awan. Any day now, them clouds gonna let up and the sun will start shining on down through. Maybe even some of this rain will let up. Me old bones is looking forward to the warmer weather too! This cold air does not do well for the joints, believe you me.

Like always, the festival starts with three competitions for fishing, hunting, and gathering. That blasted rhyming satyr, Wanton Aime (alteripseity), he leads them folk out around various locations of this valley. They cast their rods, throw them spears, and pull at bushes when he says. Whoever comes up with the biggest pile of stuff after three rounds wins.

virlym

Virlym, Fishing Champion

Fishing tourney got off to a bit of a slow start with only Juni (pneema) the pixie and Virlym (blanche.fralto) that tiefling casting their lines. They both had a bit of a fair start, but was Virlym that won in the final round, pulling out the only decently sized fish of the competition!

Things hit a bit of snag when an unexpected guest showed up. Some stranger calling himself Morthis took credit for the recent bandit raid on Stormstead. Tried to provoke the village into giving them more stuff, but that rhyming satyr wouldn’t have it! Chancellor Wanton Aime said to them, Morthis and his kind ever show up in the village again, they all gonna get arrested. Ethan Vein (edwardclawhammer) was sent to capture that strange fellow, but as all to sllow. Morthis disappeared right fast! With so few guards protecting these huts, we’ll have to wait and see how good the Chancellor makes on his promise to keep these thieves out.

byron

Byron Risato, Hunting Champion

After fishing, everyone went off to the edge of the village to start hunting. Was Juni and Virlym again, and Ethan joined, but this time a new challenger appeared: Byron Risato (jackrockwell). Ethan and Virlym couldn’t keep up after the first round, leaving just Juni and Byron against one another! Juni maintained consistent hauls of decent sized critters, but Byron won the hunting competition due to a strong start!

eshindow

Eshindow, Gathering Champion

Lastly, there was the gathering competition. And this one got the biggest group of competitors out of all of them! Juni and Byron competed again, alongside Ganis (satyrgrey) and Eshindow (darwin.lemon). Wasn’t even a close match! Eshindow, that tall pale elf, he must of tapped into his sylvan roots for he sweeped all three rounds!

As is custom for Seasonal of the Festival Pot, all things gathered, hunted, and fished were brought back to the Salty Swallow. The staff there, they chopped and cooked everything up into a BIG POT OF STEW! Mushrooms, fish, boar, fiddlehead ferns, melons, and all manner of things found this season got all mixed together. Somehow, every season, everything comes out to be just right and tasty. Don’t know how it’s down, but I reckon it’s some kinda magic. Every bowl in the house was filled up and still, there was even a bit left over.

Congratulations to Virlym (blanche.fralto), Byron Risato (jackrockwell), and Eshindow (darwin.lemon) to coming out on top as the season’s best gatherers! Will they be able to hold onto their titles next season? The next Festival of the Seasonal Pot will tell.

I’m begining to Feel like Food – A Pixie’s Perspective

logo_a-pixies-persepective

Dear Juni,

I have been in the jungle for awhile now, and made friends recently with a newcomer to our lands. I like her. We get a long great. There’s only one fly in the ointment. She eats everything. And when I say everything, I don’t mean she eats all of my food, which she does, but she also eats everyone else’s food as well, and she seems to want to eat everyone as well! Even lately, she has started to look at me like I am a prized boar instead of a friend. What am I supposed to do ?

A cure hits the village. Thanks to the kind benefactors of the land!

So it would seem you’ve all been cured.  Isn’t that just fine and dandy?  I mean it! You’re lucky the Prince arrived on the scene just in time to do some good for your citizenry.  His coming to the village was well timed, no doubt.  No, that’s not a double entendre.  I’m sure he did it that way on purpose.  And no, not because he’s your likely scapegoat. No sirs and madams, he’s your savior! Ungrateful wretches if you believe otherwise.  Always casting blame for your injury on someone other than yourselves.  Years and years spent in this jungle, having your way with the land and the natives in it and then thinking you’d just cozy up and do what you like forevermore? Laughable arrogance.

Perhaps the illness was wrought upon you by the gods who your former governor, the half drow, provoked to anger.  Some of your own people said he would! Provoke the gods to angry retribution. And yet no one is talking about that.  Well, I heard one person talking about it.  But everyone ignored her.  And blame cast its way right to the Imp.  Have you heard him talk? He’s so charming and eloquent.  Kind and benevolent.  I can’t imagine he’d do anyone any harm.  Not so much as the savage auspices of the former governor.  Or the wolf kin who prowl about the land losing control of themselves and tearing people to shreds.  Or the wayward arrows and “self defense” I’ve seen in the other citizenry of the village.

Though I am not concerned by it at all.  Our Prince will protect us from such savagery and unwarranted violence.  He will hasten our hopes and plans for a better more productive and trade friendly jungle.  He’ll do the same for the natives and the merfolk.  The only ones out of the loop are the people who live in the village and no wonder they were infected with a serious ailment, they lack a healthy connection to the land! It rebelled against them.  As the natives always said it would.

Really, someone should listen to the natives.  They’re very smart.  Gifted and inspired by their Mother goddess. Their efforts helped to cleanse the land of the vile blackness cast upon it by the indecency of the villagers. History repeating itself really.  Like they say, those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Now that everything has been set to right by the combined efforts of the Reach and the Moei Asing – dragons put back to slumber, the illness of the black silt cured by the dragon’s own blood – seems to me, the future looks bright from here.  Even for the reckless villagers.  Surely they will benefit from the good work of the Prince and the Myan!

~~ An opinion piece, by one loyal to the benefactors of the land. In response to Henry’s moaning.
